Shopping in Agra

Apart from being one of the most sought after tourist destinations in the world, Agra has the privilege of being a shopper's paradise too. The city abounds with shopping malls and areas where you can buy the specialties of the place. As the world famous Taj Mahal is made purely of Marble, it is natural that the markets must be flooded with the replicas of the Taj in marble. They can be purchased as gift item, decorative or as souvenirs. But all that glitters is not gold. So it is the same with the replicas. They are in fact not made of marble but of one stone called Talk. Besides being cheap, the stone resembles marble. So, it is advisable that while buying any marble item ensure that you are purchasing the original thing.

Agra is also noted for the leather industry, which produces a large number of leather items. These hand made leather items are made by the inmates of the Agra. This helps them earn a good livelihood. Leather chappals (sandals), purses, bags, decorative items and many more such leather products are also made by the locals. You can find sandal and rose wood items in the handicraft craft emporiums and shops. One can also find the brass decorative pieces and stone carved images in the shops. Agra is also known for soft stone inlay work and durries, the zari embroidery work. The city is also famous for its sweets 'Petha' and 'Gazak' and Saltish snack 'Dalmoth.

The main shopping areas include Taj Mahal complex, Sadar Bazaar, Kinari Bazaar, Raja-ki- Mandi and Sanjay place. Shopping is recommended at the Govt. Emporia or Souvenir Shops approved by U.P Tourism.
